| Saying goodbye to Samuel and Zapallar |
We had a lovely stay in Zapallar.......went to our favourite restaurant three times.......had a great hike on the rocky point.......had a beer or two on the beach........but now time to set out for Valparaiso. Our first stop along the way was the town of Cachagua (great surfing town), to see penguin island, and Sam's only chance to see the wee birds on the trip........I think Jutta and I will see them by the thousands as we head down south.

What can you say about Valparaiso?.........we were here only for 1 day, stayed in the old historic district and toured around there exclusively. There is not one square inch of flat ground in old town........more stairs than you can shake a stick at.........roads that are so steep I can' imagine driving on them. Our trusty GPS directed us right to the back entrance of our hotel, up a dead end street, I'm guessing at least 15% grade, and barely a car and a half wide........Sam got out and spotted for me as I did a 12 point turn, swore to myself excessively, and put a few marks on the rental car, but in the end we got turned around and found the front door of our little boutique hotel.........all good.......need a beer and something to eat!
There are amazing graffiti/murals everywhere you look.......never seen anything like it.

Gorgeous photos! (she says from -24 degrees Tiny!) While you're looking at penguins, I thought you might like to imagine the prehistoric ones - fossils have been found putting them at 5'7" tall and weighing 220 pounds! The article refers to them as 'giant wading predators'! Not so cute ... Here's the article from NYTimes, if you're interested:
