Christmas Day in BA

We arrived safely in Buenos Aires (BA) on Christmas Eve, with just enough time for a quick cleanup before heading out to dinner here in the hood.  Our hotel is in Palermo, north BA, a fairly trendy part of town, although it was largely shut down for traditional family celebrations which take place on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day, here in Argentina.  There was no way we were going to make it until midnight, and I had left my tango shoes back at the hotel, so we checked out early and grabbed some much needed shut eye.

Up early on Christmas Day, hotel staff advised that it would be almost impossible to get a cab, so we opted for the subway "Sube", and made our way downtown to meet our bicycle tour guide.  Sube was much like the TTC, except there were at least four main lines servicing the suburbs, and other shorter lines for cross town traffic.  Very efficient.  Coming out of the station to ground level was like walking into a scene from a movie where everyone on Earth had vanished.  No people, no cars, totally freaky, but as Carlos our guide explained, almost everyone had the day off, as they had all been up most of the night celebrating.  Carlos himself had a low key night with family and didn't hit the sack until about 4am, but he was ready to go, so we mounted the two wheelers and toured downtown and south BA.......about five hours with stops along the way.  Finished the tour with lunch at Carlos's favourite food truck.

Carlos identified some shopping/dining spots for us in Palermo, so it was Sube back to the hood, and a good walking tour of the area.  Dinner was fine, but we are finding the best places to eat don't have translations on the menus, and the waiters can't speak a word of English.  Enjoyed some nice Malbec, and actually bought a bottle at the attached wine store, but it is gone already.......big surprise!

Tomorrow is another day......planning to see some of the sights........more shopping........etc., etc..

Until then.........hope you are all enjoying the snow........skiing and snowshoeing must be fantastico.
