Getting to Know the Guanaco

Another day, another full schedule........we are starting the day with a hike along the eastern border of the national park, with a wildlife viewing guarantee, and plenty of warnings about the puma.  We saw this sign on the way in, and thought, a lot of good this will do for all the English speaking tourista's, then of course we looked at the back........realized the last thing I would ever want to do would be to corner a puma, and god help me if I ran away and "friggered" an attack!

For a good part of our day we had guanacos in sight........refresher course.......guanacos are the forefathers of todays llamas.......breeding and domestication has resulted in what we know as the llama today, but the guanaco is where it started, and they remain and are doing very well in these parts as far as we know........they are all over the place
Slow guanaco.

Fast guanaco
Relaxed guanaco

Guanaco central
Hiked up to the rocks in this glacial valley.......really cool rock formations

CAN YOU FIND THE FOX IN THIS PICTURE?

Can you see that look on my face???
Jutta looking really cool on the same spot

These are the rock paintings........I get it that they've been all checked out and everything, but just looks like spilly Billy walked by with a glass of red.
PICTURE OF THE DAY
A meadowlark happened to drop in just at the right time

Ranger station at the park entrance.......take me to the BBQ
This is hotel property outside the park where we go for quincho (BBQ)

Oh yeah.......it's a meatfest

After lunch Mummy went for a ride
Daddy went for a walk around the lake
and had his first look at the towers......hiking up to those suckers in a couple of days
When Jutta got back they released the horses out to pasture.....sure they were happy to go
The towers are looming
Managed to catch a condor out for a recon later in the day......probably looking for dinner
Guanaco sentinel.......one will often hang at the top of a hill and warn the herd below if Mr Puma is in the neighbourhood

I ain't afraid ah no puma!........not!!!!

  1. Pumas in the area? Not sure I'd be able to hike ANYWHERE, knowing I'd be sure to frigger an attack
if one appeared along the trail. I'm happy to live vicariously through your adventure, though! :-)
We're at the Austin airport, getting ready to leave this 'puma-free' zone for the equally 'puma-free'
city of San Diego, then on to Carlsbad for the duration of winter. :-)
